Eye surgeons offer bladeless cataract surgery

Dr. Larry E. Patterson, M.D. of Eye Centers of Tennessee is the first and only physician in East Tennessee to begin offering a bladeless laser cataract removal procedure to their patients. "I have been performing cataract surgery for my patients in the local area for more than 20 years and am excited to begin offering the Femtosecond laser for cataract removal. This new technology provides a more advanced manner by which to perform several steps of the procedure," said Patterson. "Our adoption of this technology is a testament to our dedication to offering the most advanced technology as an option for the patients in our community." This Femtosecond laser signifies a bold leap forward in cataract surgery by bringing image-guided computer precision to refractive cataract surgeons. The system performs surgery according to surgeon preferences, using focused laser pulses to create incisions in the lens capsule, crystalline lens and the cornea. This results in treatments that are tailored to surgeon specifications and may deliver a remarkable degree of accuracy, there-by extending the surgeon's expertise with laser precision. Surgeons utilizing this new technology will be able to create predictable openings that carry through subsequent steps of cataract surgery as it helps them deliver on a targeted refractive outcome. "I am thrilled to be the first in the area to perform refractive cataract surgery, astigmatic correction and presbyopia correction utilizing this advancement in predictability, precision and efficiency for patients throughout the Upper Cumberland and East Tennessee area," said Patterson. Eye Centers of Tennessee is an Upper Cumberland area-based ophthalmology practice, specializing in total eye care. Dr. Peek is Guest Speaker at Tennessee Technological University

On March 15th, Dr. Jennifer Peek from our Cookeville office was invited to speak to the Chemical Medical Club students at Tennessee Technological University regarding her career choice as an optometrist. Dr. Peek answered student's questions and gave them advice as they begin their own journey to decide what field of medicine they will enter. She gave them insight to the world of optometry and told of her own transition from Tennessee Tech to optometry school. One Tech student has already visited the Cookeville office to shadow Dr. Peek in order to see a day in the life of an optometrist.

The Chemical Medical Club at Tennessee Technological University is a club that allows Medical professionals to visit students and share the ins and outs of their profession to help students understand what it takes to be successful, and what it takes to get into a professional graduate program as well. It is a club that puts students in touch with the professionals they need to know to give them insight to the professional world.

Dr. Patterson is Guest Speaker in Moscow

In late October, Dr. Larry Patterson traveled to Moscow, Russia to serve as a guest speaker for the Russian Society of Ophthalmologists at the "Eleventh Annual Technologies in Cataract and Refractive Surgeries Convention".

Dr. Patterson spoke about efficency and effectiveness in cataract and refractive surgery, and explained some of the techniques commonly used by American Ophthalmic surgeons. Dr. Patterson was pleased to be invited to such an event stating, "Most people are unaware of the advances we have made in eye care that began in Russia, such as Radial Keratotomy, so I was honored to go over there and teach them some of our techniques in cataract surgery."

When asked about his personal experience in Moscow, he said "Despite the tensions between the U.S. and Russia from a political standpoint, people are the same anywhere you go, but I was surprised however, by how many people knew about our own practice here in Crossville, Tennessee."

Dr. Larry Patterson Named in "Premier Surgeon's" Top 250 Surgeons List

Crosssville Chronicle - Tuesday, October 12, 2010

Dr. Larry Patterson, medical director and surgeon at Eye Centers of Tennessee, was recently named to Premier Surgeon's PS250 list. Premier Surgeon is a trade publication focusing on premium lens implants and lens implant surgery. Premier Surgeon's PS250 list recognizes 250 ophthalmic surgeons that are leaders and innovators in the field of premium intraocular lens implants (IOL's) and refractive surgery.

In a process similar to traditional cataract surgery, premium IOL lens implant surgery replaces the natural crystalline lens in the eye. However, unlike traditional surgery implants, these newer lenses allow the patients to see at variable distances improving both distance and near vision without glasses. These newer implants are often an ideal choice for the active Baby Boomer who is now having difficulty seeing up close (relying on bifocals or reading glasses) and/or is in the beginning stages of developing cataracts. New research into improvement of lens implant surgery is continuing to make it easier, safer, more comfortable and more precise for the surgeon and patient.

Only four ophthalmologists in Tennessee were included on the list: one in Memphis, two in Nashville, and Dr. Patterson.

"Today, people have a longer more active lifestyle and they are concerned with how they will see after cataract surgery," said Ray Mays, administrator of Eye Centers of Tennessee.

"Today's top cataract surgeons have combined the lessons learned from refractive procedures such as LASIK with the newest intraocular lens implant technology and microsurgical advances to provide patients with a life less dependent upon glasses."

Dr. Larry Patterson has performed thousands of laser vision corrections with outstanding success.
